Liberians were astonished on Wednesday morning when the news spread like a rumble of thunder, “the Capitol Building, the seat of the Liberian legislature was gutted by fire.

In the wake of the recent, devastating fire that engulfed the Capitol Building, a symbol of our nation’s democracy, the government faces an imperative task: to uncover the truth and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

It is important to know that the implications of this fire at the Capitol extend far beyond structural damage; it strikes at the very heart of our democratic principles and public trust.

Amidst the turmoil following the contentious removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, many have speculated about potential connections between the political upheaval and the arson attack. Speaker Koffa’s recent post, deleted later “Fear nothing but to do wrong,” adds another layer of complexity to an already tangled narrative.

However, speculation alone is insufficient to levy accusations or draw conclusions. As a society, we must adhere to principles of justice and due process, reserving judgment until all facts are unveiled.

The onus is now on law enforcement agencies to uphold their mandate with the utmost diligence and impartiality. The Liberian police must prioritize thorough investigative processes to identify perpetrators.

This is essential for justice and restoring the faith of citizens who feel vulnerable and disenfranchised. Their duty, first and foremost, is to act with integrity, putting the nation’s interests and trust at the forefront of their efforts.

We urge the government to provide the police with all necessary resources, enabling a comprehensive investigation. Transparency throughout this process will be critical in maintaining public confidence. Liberia stands at a pivotal moment; and this investigation could either fortify the rule of law or erode it, depending on how justice is pursued and dispensed.

As citizens, we must demand accountability, while refraining from unfounded judgments. Our unity and resilience will testify to our collective commitment to justice and democracy.
Let us uphold the ideals of our nation by ensuring that those who betrayed them see the face of justice.
