Liberia’s delegation is participating in the 133rd Session of the International Maritime Organization – IMO Council, which commenced today at the IMO headquarters in London. Liberia Permanent Representative to the IMO Hon. Robert Wilmont Kpadeh expressed his delight in welcoming Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr. Commissioner and CEO of the Liberia Maritime Authority, as head of the delegation.
The Council is the executive organ of IMO and is responsible, under the Assembly, for supervising the work of the Organization. The Council is made up of 40 Member States, elected by the Assembly for two-year terms. The 133rd session of the IMO Council is set to address pressing maritime topics, including environmental regulations and global shipping safety standards.
Cllr. Lighe, Sr. is joined by Nimba County Senator Nya D. Twayen. As a senior Council Member of the IMO, Liberia’s presence at the council underscores its prominent role in shaping maritime policies and regulations on the international stage.
Liberia is set to make five significant interventions during today’s deliberations, tackling critical issues on the council’s agenda. While specific details of these interventions remain under wraps, they are expected to align with Liberia’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, safety, and innovation in the maritime sector.
Liberia, which operates the world’s largest ship registry in terms of gross tonnage, plays a pivotal role in international maritime governance. Its participation at C/133 underscores the country’s commitment to championing progressive policies for the global shipping industry.
