From April 3 to 8, 2025 (local time), the Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia (CIUL) successfully hosted one of the 2025 International Chinese Language Day events—a hard-pen calligraphy competition. The competition attracted over 200 students, and after a fierce competition, 20 outstanding participants stood out and won awards.

This year’s International Chinese Language Day was themed “Chinese Language: A Gift Across Time and Space”. Inspired by this theme, CIUL organized a calligraphy competition focused on “cultural heritage,” encouraging students to experience the depth of Chinese culture and the artistic beauty of Chinese characters through handwriting.

Participants carefully wrote classical regulated verses and quatrains, using pen and ink to express the charm of the language and convey the unique elegance of Chinese culture.

During the competition, students showed great concentration, expressing their understanding and love for the art of calligraphy stroke by stroke. Judges evaluated the entries based on neatness, stroke fluency, and structural balance.

Eventually, top entries were selected from each level. The award winners shared that the competition not only improved their handwriting but also deepened their appreciation and understanding of Chinese character culture.

As part of the 2025 International Chinese Language Day series, the calligraphy competition reflected CIUL’s active efforts in promoting cultural exchange between China and Liberia.

Throughout April, CIUL will continue to host a variety of cultural events aligned with the theme of Chinese Language Day, further encouraging Chinese language learning and fostering deeper China-Liberia cultural exchange—allowing more people to experience Chinese language as a true “gift across time and space.”
